ELECTRICAL SERVICES FIRE PROTECTION

Electrical cables and conductor bus bars are used to supply electricity to emergency services within buildings. The safeguarding of cables and conductor bars from direct fire and ensuring that the temperature of the cables remains within the manufacturer’s parameters are of prime importance. Most electrical conductors today are covered in some form of polymer, synthetic rubber or in special cases encapsulated mineral insulated materials. These forms of material can emit very hazardous and toxic fumes which can be cause for concern with evacuations of occupants. 

LAF’s cable and bus bar passive fire protection solutions are drawn from the extensive experience gained in the field as well as actual fire tests carried out on cable systems. LAF have carried out fire testing to AS3013 as well as AS1530.4 where the cables have been fixed directly to concrete slabs or in a cable tray arrangement in accordance with AS 4072 Appendix D.

Vermiduct® or Vermitex® can be sprayed directly over the cables, or over a Trimesh® enclosure however one should consult with the Electrical Engineer to check if the cables should be ‘de-rated’ (as the Vermiduct® or Vermitex® will act as Insulators). If the cables cannot be sprayed direct and must be allowed to dissipate the heat generated, LAF suggests that a sheetmetal enclosure be built around the cables which can then be sprayed. Alternatively a Trimesh® enclosure can be used to achieve the same effect.
