Fire compartmentalization is employed to reduce and eliminate wherever possible the risk of fire spread in buildings. Compartmentalization is achieved through floors and walls that resist the spread of fire. Typically fire compartments fail due to openings created for services as well as people.
Over the past 50 years, considerable efforts have been made by LAF to invest in developing proprietary fire-sealing systems designed to ensure that the performance of fire separations is not prejudiced due to inadequate detailing of services which pass through floor/ceiling or walls.
LAF staff is qualified to certify, install and maintain, inspect and test - fire collars, fire rated penetrations and fire rated joint sealing. LAF recommends that special attention be paid for all types of penetrations through any fire rated membrane but especially through timber floor systems, as in some cases these services penetrations should be totally isolated with proven non-combustible lightweight mortars to the immediate vicinity of the fire collars.
LAF make use of horizontal and vertical membranes constructed from Trimesh® and which is then sprayed with Vermiduct® or Vermitex® range of products. The systems developed by LAF are based on everyday construction methodologies and the mortars employed to seal around dampers, fire collars, cable trays, pipes etc are the same used in spraying the rest of the wall.
