The Vermitex® floor /roof ceiling system is a popular fire rated ceiling system for commercial building applications. The system is commonly applied to the underside of timber floor-roofs which today we find in old walk-up construction type, such as block of apartments from the 60’s and 70’s some of which today, are in need of an upgrade or maintenance. Unless the inter-tenancy walls were taken to the underside of the roof lining, the roof ceiling system would have had to achieve at least a 1 hour FRL.
LAF’s floor ceiling systems tested below a ‘timber floor’, and roof ceiling system tested below a ‘terracotta tiled roof’, have successfully achieved one to four hour fire resistance levels in compliance with Building Code regulations. LAF tested systems SI-20 Vermitex® (120/120/90) below terracotta tiled roof, and SI-81 Vermitex® (FRL 120/120/120) below a timber floor, were fixed directly to the underside of the timber rafters and joists whilst in SI-1589 the Vermitex® had been sprayed on a double layer of mesh supported on steel channels suspended below a metal deck roof as explained in FCO-1206. The results warrant our systems being fixed either directly or suspended from purlins and the full systems is outlined in FCO-0670.
The LAF 2 hour FRL Floor /Roof Ceiling systems satisfy the Incipient spread of Fire criteria, when applied to the thicknesses outlined in FCO-1206 and FCO-0670, are very light and at only 35 mm thick are also thin, avoiding excessive services space encroachments. Vermitex® ‘AF' Floor Ceiling systems also have inherent noise abatement properties across the entire frequency spectrum.
LAF VALUE ENGINEERING
Vermitex® ‘AF' Floor /Roof Ceiling system still offer incredibly cost effective alternatives when high fire resistance is necessary (i.e. from 90 minutes to 4 hours) and where MEP services need to penetrate the ceilings. This is particularly relevant where a secondary architectural ceiling will cover the uppermost fire rated ceiling as well as all the services. Application of the Vermitex® ‘AF’ may be carried out by hand but preferably by mechanical means to suitable reinforcing substrates such as Trimesh®, expanded metal lath, ripple iron, rib lath.
