The inherent strength of steel offers flexibility in architecture and design, which allows the incorporation of large span distances and curves. Structural steel framed buildings are also preferred thanks to the longevity and durability of the material itself. In addition, due to the high strength/weight ratio, steel is an attractive structural material for long-span bridges, high-rise buildings, structures located on soft ground or in highly seismic areas. However, the common temperatures observed during building fires reduce substantially the strength of steel. Also, the burning side of the building will conduct and transmit heat through the steel quite fast. Consequently, STEEL FIRE PROTECTION in buildings must be adequate.
LAF has developed systems which are used for STRUCTURAL STEEL FIRE PROTECTION. The full range of Vermitex® products have been extensively tested by the CSIRO through tests FSH-0007 and FSH-0026 and they comply with the most pertinent Australian and International Standards. Generally and notwithstanding specific exemption cases, the Vermitex® range can be applied to steel members without the aid of mechanical reinforcement. As with all spray applied fire protection materials, ‘bonding’ (‘stickability’) is of paramount importance, hence the substrate condition must not impair proper adhesion. Vermitex® coatings should not be applied to structural elements which have been coated with incompatible or non-compliant paint finishes with a low melting point. Vermitex® ‘AF’ is our most popular system engineered (refer FCO-1299) for Structural Steel and used to upgrade, for structural stability periods up to 240 minutes, steel Beams, Columns, Angles and Wide Plates. The Fire Resistance Level (FRL) will depend on the thickness of the applied material. Tables of Thickness can be referred to in our Design Manual or FCO1299 (please refer to L & A Fazzini Mfg P/L for details).
