Perlite is a raw material which, in its natural state, is a glassy volcanic rock containing a percentage of water. During a process called “Expansion”, Perlite is rapidly heated and expands up to twenty times its original size, due to the evaporation of the moisture from within. Expanded Perlite is a lightweight, air entraining material, which is both absorbent and acts as a filter aid. It is sterile and both environmentally friendly and chemically neutral.
TYPICAL USE OF PERLITE
The valuable properties of expanded Perlite enable it to be used in a wide variety of applications across many industries. Some examples of these applications are:
- For agricultural use: seed raising, hydroponics, cuttings, capillary watering, soil conditioning, turf dressing and potting mixes
- For Industrial use: oil and chemical absorbent, abrasives, filter aids, packaging, refractory mixes, insulation.
Vermiculite is a mineral similar to mica. During a process called Exfoliation, Vermiculite is subjected to intense heat and can expand up to twenty times its original size. As Exfoliation occurs, millions of microscopic gaps are created within the plates which give Vermiculite excellent insulation and water retention properties. Besides these highly beneficial qualities, Vermiculite is lightweight, air entraining and absorbent. It is also environmentally friendly, chemically neutral and virtually sterile after exfoliation.

- For Agricultural use: potting mixes, seed germination, animal feed, propagation, soil conditioner, hydroponics, fertilizers.
- For Industrial use: castables, brake pads, furnaces, filtration, insulation, waste disposal, absorbent, packaging.
